The returned letter

An original fictional mystery. All characters, places and events are invented.

01

One address, two names

The envelope returned to Mara’s bookshop three times. Someone had crossed out “E. Bell” and written “No longer here.” Inside lay a photograph of a railway bench and a note: “You left before the last chapter.” Mara knew the bench. Her grandfather had carved it for a station that no longer existed.

02

The mark on the back

She was about to search for an Eleanor when she noticed a pencil mark: Volume E, Bell collection. E. Bell might not be a person. The old stock ledger listed a donation of local histories under that heading. Between two pages, Mara found a reading group’s lending slip.

03

A meeting, not a disappearance

The note belonged to a serial the group had written together. Its last member had moved the meetings to the library, leaving the shop’s address on a box. Mara delivered the photograph to the librarian. A week later, an invitation arrived: would she help write the ending? This time, both the address and the name were right.
