  1. As a Fire Department Company Officer, how do I develop a Firefighter who has been on the job for 22 years and still doesn’t get it?! He doesn’t want to learn and his peers can’t trust him in an emergency. His previous CO has let him down by not holding him accountable and now it’s my t urn to train and motivate him to perform. Any advise on how to make this happen?

    1. Performance management. Your top performers are picking up the slack for him and that’s not sustainable. If you haven’t already, establish the standard. Inform him that he is well below the standard and has a set period of time time to improve (30 days). When he fails to meet your standard. Terminate. Most likely a bad hire to begin with.
