  2. Jocko – I heard you and Peter talking about his medical residency colleague putting ground coffee in his eyes so that the pain would keep him awake. Sounds rough! I have also heard of a similar thing being done by fighter pilots. In his book “Baa Baa Blacksheep”, Greg (Pappy) Boyington tells the story of putting tobacco from a cigarette in the corners of his eyes during combat missions to stay awake. During his second combat deployment he drew near Eddie Rickenbacker’s record of 28 kills, and was flying every combat mission he could to try and equal that record. He was exhausted, and was feeling pressure from his superiors and himself, and resorted to this to help keep going.
